Schools and libraries

My School in the Rain Forest: How Children Attend School Around the World
by Margriet Ruurs

Readers who enjoyed Susan Hughes' Off to Class will also like Ruurs' book. The schools she discovered are on boats, on mountains, in monasteries, and in jungles. Other students attend class by radio.

Inserts provide geographical information, although the maps are too vague. They show country outlines only; the location of cities aren't included.

My Librarian Is a Camel: How Books Are Brought to Children Around the World
by Margriet Ruurs

Children who get their library books from brick-and-mortar buildings will be surprised to learn that other children aren't so lucky. In places that are too remote for easy access, library books are delivered by bus, mail, wheelbarrow, boat, camel, donkey, and elephant!

The text is a bit dry, and more quotes from young readers would have been nice; still, kids should find the book interesting.

The history of libraries

The Library Book: The Story of Libraries from Camels to Computers
by Maureen Sawa

Ever wonder how libraries evolved? Just as books began as papyrus scrolls and later, to electronic texts, libraries have been influenced by the advent of the Roman alphabet, the development of paper, and the invention of the printing press.

How the first libraries were built and how borrowing services have changed throughout history are examined in Maureen Sawa's informative book. A librarian herself, she provides irrefutable proof of the importance of libraries to society. Readers will want to check out her many references to virtual libraries and printed books.

Back to school

Off to Class: Incredible and Unusual Schools Around the World
by Susan Hughes

All around the world, kids are off to school. But not just any school! These are schools on boats, in tents, in caves, on buses, and on train platforms. There are even nomadic schools, sustainable schools, and a school in a treehouse! Filled with vibrant photos and interviews with students, this is an informative, eye-opening book. The enthusiasm of children eager to learn also makes it an inspiring book.

A wonderful back-to-school gift!
